A Lifelong Passion for George Michael
Hi, I'm Steve Mitchell, and first and foremost, I'm just a devoted George Michael fan based in Kent, England. My journey began in late 1984, and since that transformative day, I've been singing his songs almost every single day across the UK and internationally. You could say it's been a journey from shower to stage.
George's voice is infectious and addictive to me. As a professional tribute artist performing throughout England, Scotland, and Wales, I don't really listen to much else. His music has shaped not just my voice, but my entire approach to performance and connecting with audiences from London to Edinburgh, Manchester to Cardiff.
A Cherished Memory
I remember Christmas 1987 vividly. When my mum asked what I wanted for Christmas, the answer was immediate: the "Faith" album on cassette. But here's where my mischievous side emerged...
I couldn't resist sneaking into the cupboard where mum kept the Christmas presents. I carefully found my bag, gently opened the wrapped "Faith" cassette, and copied it to a blank tape before returning it perfectly to its wrapping. By Christmas morning, I'd already been singing those songs for three months!
Mum still doesn't know to this day. It was the beauty of George's music – it was simply irresistible.
Musical Foundations
Early Influences
Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories are sitting by the piano with my father, singing along as he played. Those precious moments shaped not just my voice, but my deep love for performing and connecting with people through music.
First Performance
At 16, I was asked to sing "Careless Whisper" at The New Inn pub in Sandwich, Kent. I'll never forget that night – standing there, nervous but excited, feeling the room come alive with such an iconic song. It was the first time I truly realized how powerful music can be in bringing people together.
Professional Journey Across the UK
Since those early days in Kent, I've been blessed with the opportunity to honor George Michael's incredible legacy on stages both big and small across the United Kingdom. From the beautiful Clapham Grand Theatre in London to the historic Blackpool Winter Gardens in Lancashire, every performance has been a privilege and a joy.
My journey has even taken me across the ocean to the United States, where I've performed alongside amazing cover bands and shared George's music with new audiences. Whether it's a theatre in Birmingham, a festival in Glasgow, or a private event in Manchester, each show brings its own magic, its own energy, and its own unforgettable moments.
The locals at those early pub performances in Kent always asked me to sing George's songs – it was just such a good feeling. That same warmth and connection continues to drive every performance today, whether I'm performing in intimate venues or major theatres across England, Scotland, and Wales.
